The latest DC movie SHAZAM! is currently lighting up the box office around the world and earning rave reviews from critics and audiences – so basically, it’s a big hit. One thing fans may have been hoping for over the course of the movie (or at least in the credits sequence) was an appearance of the iconic character Black Adam, set to be played by Dwayne Johnson, but that reveal never came directly in the form of a big cameo. Still, we will probably be seeing the character sooner rather than later now that SHAZAM! is doing so well, and Johnson took to social media to say they should be starting production on the solo Adam movie in about a year.

The news comes from the smiling mouth of Johnson while he was in Hawaii (Jumanji script in front of him), where he took to Instagram to thank the fans for making SHAZAM! a success. In the process he talked a lot about Black Adam, saying that he’s been living with the character for over a decade that they “should start shooting that in about a year.”

Going further, Johnson said that they tried as hard as they could to tell two origin stories in one script, but that after a while it just wasn’t working. The superstar said it came down to the decision to split them into two separate movies.

The challenges were, as you guys can imagine, you're trying to tell two very big origin stories in the world of comic books of this DC universe. Two very important characters trying to tell both their origin stories in one script. I didn't think it was working. Finally, I called up Warner Bros., Toby Emmerich…I said, 'Brother, we have to split these stories and make two different movies.' He said, 'You know what? It is a great idea and let's do it.'

While the character will be getting his own movie soon, we saw a tease of his origin story over the course of SHAZAM! in the form of a little light show the wizard (Djimon Hounsou) put on for Billy Batson (Asher Angel). In that little story, he tells the origin of a champion they once choose to house their powers, but he used them for evil and unleashed the Seven Deadly Sins on the world, killing millions. Even by the standards of some DC movies that sounds a bit grim, so who knows if that’s where the solo Adam movie would focus.

This movie starring Johnson has been getting teased for ages, but the DC series has been going through so many fluctuations over the years it’s understandable why it’s taken so long to happen. But now that the seeds have been sowed thanks to SHAZAM! we’re legit getting closer and closer to Johnson unleashing his magical fury on the world.

SHAZAM! is in theaters now.
