Despite his incredible run of box office success with FAST FIVE, G.I. JOE: RETALIATION, PAIN & GAIN, and FAST AND FURIOUS 6, Dwayne Johnson cannot save every movie he is in. In fact, his latest movie EMPIRE STATE isn’t going to tally any box office numbers at all.
According to Blu-ray.com, Dito Montiel‘s latest film will be going directly to home video on September 3, 2013. The studio behind EMPIRE STATE, Lionsgate, must have zero faith in the movie to make a move like this. Here’s the plot synopsis:
A drama centered on two childhood friends who plan to rob an armored car depository, and the NYPD officer who stands in their way.
Aside from Johnson and Hemsworth, EMPIRE STATE also stars Emma Roberts, Nikki Reed, James Ransone and Michael Angarano. Director Montiel made a splash years ago with A GUIDE TO RECOGNIZING YOUR SAINTS while his most recent film, A SON OF NO ONE starring Channing Tatum, bombed with a total gross of less than $50,000.
This news follows the Robert De Niro and John Travolta film KILLING SEASON getting a brief theatrical run before going to Blu-ray and contributes to the overall changes in the feature film industry where even bankable names cannot guarantee box office results.
