THE CARD PLAYER

Courtesy of Anchor Bay Entertainment, who picked this film from the shelves comes the 2004 film by Dario Argento The Card Player a.k.a. The Card Dealer (see Arrow’s review here ). The movie stars Stefania Rocca as a policewoman tormented by a psychopathic killer who forces her to play Internet poker—with the lives of kidnapped women as the stakes. So far, the only extras that have been announced are 16×9 widescreen with Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround sound, and the extras include the previously announced Alan Jones commentary along with an Argento interview, a behind-the-scenes featurette and trailers. The DVD is set for an August 23rd release

DEAD & BREAKFAST

Also coming from Anchor Bay is the independent film that’s gaining lots of attention including from Arrow himself (check the review) The hilarious and very bloody film is set for a September 6th release. Anchor Bay is also tagging the following extras and specs to the DVD…

SLAUGHTERHOUSE OF THE RISING SUN

Velocity Home Entertainment has announced the details of its September 27 DVD release of the 1971 independent controversial shocker Slaughterhouse of the Rising Sun. The film is directed by Vin Crease, who also co-stars, and shows a girl who suffers psychotic visions, is put in a mental institution and, after being discharged, falls in with a strange desert “family.” The group decides to crash in an abandoned house, where Jennifer’s visions become reality as the “family” is slain one by one. The film is also going to be available on VHS for those who still live in a shack as well.

  • 16×9-enhanced
  • 1.78:1 transfer with Dolby 2.0 Stereo sound
  • Director’s commentary and the Losing the Light featurette

BLOODY MALLORY

The last french horror movie I saw knocked my socks off, that being High Tension of course. Well, Lions Gate has another french horror film coming to DVD and this time it’s got an even hotter chick in the lead role. Olivia Bonamy who is pictured in the leather that she wore at my house last night stars as the heroine who is set on blowing off some monsters one by one, with a gun of course. The film hits the shelves September 13th.

  • English-dubbed option,
  • A making-of featurette.

OTHER LION’S GATE TITLES

The following Tuesday, September 20, Lion’s Gate is releasing a shit-load of more horror titles which include…Pumpkinhead special edition, Dolly Dearest, Midnight, Pinocchio’s Revenge and The Resurrected. Coming October 4 is the new indie chiller Desperate Souls, written and directed by Chad Archibald and Philip Carrer, in which a group of teenagers on a camping trip are plagued by tortured spirits set free via an ancient book of druidic magic. Finally, October 11 is the release date for Dark Harvest 2.
