Four months after the project was unveiled at the Cannes Virtual Market, Disney's Searchlight arm (formerly Fox Searchlight) has picked up the rights to the horror thriller DUST, which is set to be directed by Will Joines and Karrie Crouse from a screenplay by Crouse, a staff writer on multiple episodes of Westworld.
Claire Foy is signed on to star in the film as
a woman who becomes increasingly traumatized in 1930s Oklahoma amid the region’s horrific dust storms and convinces herself that a mysterious presence is threatening her family. She then takes extraordinary measures to protect them.
That sounds interesting to me, I like the idea of a horror film taking place during 1930s dust storms. Apparently the film is going to be "fairly self-contained"; it's set at a remote farmhouse and will feature "a small number of starring roles and a minimalistic aesthetic".
DUST is being produced by Alix Madigan of Mad Dog Films and Lucas Joaquin of Secret Engine.
This will mark the feature directorial debut of Joines and Crouse. Foy's previous credits include the Nicolas Cage movie SEASON OF THE WITCH, the TV series The Crown, Steven Soderbergh's UNSANE, and the DRAGON TATTOO follow-up THE GIRL IN THE SPIDER'S WEB.
