Dungeons & Dragons app lets fans create own avatar

Honor Among Thieves, the new Dungeons & Dragons movie, has a new app that lets fans create an avatar based on their favorite character type.

With early buzz on Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves suggesting it could be a crossover hit, Paramount has initiated the launch of a new app that will let die-hards and rookies alike immerse themselves in the franchise, almost literally, creating an avatar based around their favorite Dungeons & Dragons characters.

Paramount has teamed with Lightricks (the company behind Facetune and Photoleap) for an app which will “let fans create images of themselves as their favorite DnD characters to share or post on their social platforms…These Dungeon and Dragons avatars let fans join in the fun and build characters that immerse them deeper into their game experience.” Through the process, fans can download the Photoleap app, upload 10-20 pictures of themselves and within minutes they’ll have a custom avatar. That’s a heck of a lot less effort than going through an entire campaign!

Through the app, fans can turn themselves into a number of Dungeons & Dragons character types, including a music and magic-forward Bard, a justice-wielding knight, a nature-focused Druid, and more. But no, you will never have the jawline of Chris Pine nor the charm to convince Michelle Rodriguez to go on a date.

Apps such as the one for the upcoming Dungeons & Dragons movie not only serve as promotion, but actually give users something to do “within” the world. Another recent example is the Transformers: Rise of the Beasts app, which uses augmented reality to let fans scan the movie’s touring statues to unlock various videos, stickers, etc.

Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves follows “a charming thief and a band of unlikely adventurers as they embark on an epic quest to retrieve a lost relic. Things go dangerously awry when they run afoul of the wrong people.” Directed by Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley, the movie stars Chris Pine, Michelle Rodriguez, Regé-Jean Page, and more. Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves comes to theaters on March 31st.
