Denis Villeneuve’s DUNE remake starring Timothée Chalamet, Oscar Isaac, and Zendaya (as well as a slew of other A-Listers) is probably one of my most anticipated films coming out this year. Villeneuve’s ARRIVAL is one of my favorite sci-fi films of all time (I ended it a blubbering mess), and BLADE RUNNER 2049 was a great continuation of a classic film. So I can't wait to see what Villeneuve’s vision for Frank Herbert's universe looks like! Here's the official synopsis:
In the far future of humanity, Duke Leto Atreides accepts stewardship of the dangerous desert planet Arrakis, also known as Dune, the only source of the most valuable substance in the universe, "the spice", a drug which extends human life, provides superhuman levels of thought, and makes foldspace travel possible. Though Leto knows the opportunity is an intricate trap set by his enemies, he takes his Bene Gesserit concubine Lady Jessica, young son and heir Paul, and most trusted advisers to Arrakis. Leto takes control of the spice mining operation, which is made perilous by the presence of giant sandworms. A bitter betrayal leads Paul and Jessica to the Fremen, natives of Arrakis who live in the deep desert.
However, DUNE is also probably by far the most epic film Villeneuve has directed, and according to Deadline, additional photography will have to be done in August to complete the film (just a few months before the film's current December release date).
Here's what actor Oscar Isaac (who plays Duke Leto Atreides, the father to Chalamet's Paul Atreides) had to say about the situation:
We’re going to do some additional shooting in mid August… they’re saying in Budapest in Hungary…I saw some things cut together and it just looks amazing. Denis [Villeneuve] is a real artist and it will be exciting to see it come together. It’s kind of wild that we’re doing some additional shooting a few months before it’s supposed to come out, but that happened with Star Wars as well.
That last bit about STAR WARS (presumably referring to the most recent THE RISE OF SKYWALKER is…foreboding). But I'm sure Villeneuve will pull it off! Hell, apparently he and the production team spent a whole f*cking year on designing the iconic sandworms, so I still have faith.
Meanwhile, Villeneuve’s DUNE is still on track for a December 18th release – but we'll keep you updated if there are any changes.
So what do you guys think? Excited for DUNE? If so, what do you think about what they've shown so far? Either way, sound off below!
