After years and years of hype, Denis Villeneuve’s highly anticipated Dune finally hits theatres and HBO Max this weekend. A magnificent adaptation of Frank Herbert’s novel (read my review), the film has a bit of an uphill climb at the box office due to the fact that the film is being released in a hybrid model, which usually spells doom at the box office – sad to say. Nevertheless, when the film was screened at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), Villeneuve and all involved seemed optimistic about the chance of them being able to finish the adaptation via a second film.
I got to speak to Rebecca Ferguson at the fest (via zoom), and, predictably, she was hyped on the film was thrilled to see that audiences seemed to be embracing the film. In our interview, she discussed working on real sets instead of green screen, the chances of them finally getting to do a sequel, and the potential of a spinoff show focusing on the Bene Gesserit, Dune: The Sisterhood, which still seems to be underway at HBO Max. I assume everything will depend on how audiences receive the film. But, again, I absolutely loved this movie. I like people being able to choose whatever format they wish to see a movie in, but if you have the opportunity, see Dune in theatres. It certainly deserves to be seen on as good of a theatre as possible.
