Drew Goddard on where his X-Force movie goes after Deadpool 2

Last Updated on August 5, 2021

SPOILERS for DEADPOOL 2. Wade Wilson is far from the only "hero" in the DEADPOOL sequel, in fact, he assembles his own super, duper team in the film consisting of Zazie Beetz as Domino, Terry Crews as Bedlam, Lewis Tan as Shatterstar, Bill Skarsgård as Zeitgeist, Rob Delaney as Peter, and [SPOILER] as Vanisher, thereby setting the stage for Drew Goddard's upcoming X-FORCE film.

With the exception of Domino and Peter (who was saved by Deadpool during the mid-credit sequence), the X-Force team memorably met their end in a variety of gruesome ways after parachuting from a plane and failing to stick the landing. While speaking with Entertainment Weekly, X-FORCE writer/director Drew Goddard commented on the superhero squad getting killed off before he got a chance to play with them. "What I love most about what Ryan [Reynolds] and his crew over there was able to do with the Deadpool movies is bring this certain sense of surprise and danger," Goddard said. "You walk into those movies, and you really don’t know what’s going to happen." Thankfully, Goddard wasn't exactly in the dark about the plans for the first incarnation of the X-Force team, in fact, he was thrilled that it wiped the slate clean for his film.

One thing I said to Ryan was, ‘Don’t worry about it, we’ll come up with new ideas; you guys go make your movie, and do your thing. We’ll figure it out.' That tends to be the way I like to work. It’s much more important to focus on making the movie that you’re making than focusing on the next thing. It’s much more important to just make one good movie and take your time, then let that dictate what the movies are after.

Drew Goddard added that his movie will put the focus on Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds), Cable (Josh Brolin), and Domino (Zazie Beetz), the three X-Force characters which he says he's loved since he was a child. "It really all stems from a place of love; I love those comics, I love Ryan, I love Josh, and I love Zazie Beetz," said Goddard. "When I think of the comics, I think of Cable and Domino and Deadpool, and it’s really just knowing, ‘Oh, right, there’s a world in the X-Universe for the blunt instruments of mutantdom.’ It’s much more about the characters and my love for them than it is about any plot or story line. It’s more about loving them and wanting to see them bounce off each other."

DEADPOOL 2 is playing in theaters.
