Drew Barrymore had a moment of reflection during a sit-down interview with Dylan Farrow on her syndicated talk show. Farrow, who is the daughter of Woody Allen, has made claims of incest against her father that were explored in HBO's Allen v. Farrow docuseries earlier this year. Barrymore, who has in Allen's 1996 film Everyone Says I Love You, took the opportunity during the interview to express her regret for every working with the polarizing director.
"I worked with Woody Allen. I did a film with him in 1996 called, Everyone Says I Love You, and there was no higher career calling card than to work with Woody Allen. Then I had children, and it changed me because I realized that I was one of the people who was basically gaslit into not looking at a narrative beyond what I was being told. And I see what is happening in the industry now and that is because of you making that brave choice. So thank you for that."
During the interview on The Drew Barrymore Show, Farrow thanked the actress turned talk show host for her words by saying "Hearing what you just said, I am trying not to cry right now. It is just so meaningful because it's easy for me to say, 'Of course you shouldn't work with him; he's a jerk, he's a monster, but I just find it incredibly brave and incredibly generous that you would say to me that my story and what I went through was important enough for you to reconsider that."
In addition to the HBO docuseries, a companion podcast was also released that dived deeper into Farrow's claims. The docuseries featured never-before-seen video footage of Farrow at age 7 describing the alleged abuse to her mother, Mia Farrow. Dylan Farrow's claims were made public in a 1993 lawsuit that awarded Mia Farrow custody of her and Allen's children. The lawsuit famously resurfaced in the #MeToo era and the docuseries explored how the case played out in the media and public arena in the '90s.
Barrymore is now amongst a long list of stars that have publicly shared their regret over working with Allen in recent years. When Farrow resurfaced her story in early 2018, many people in Hollywood publicly supported Farrow and a plethora of performers apologized for working with Allen in the past. Many of them publicly vowed to never work with him again and they donated their salaries that they earned for doing recent projects with the director.
