Sam Raimi teases that Drag Me to Hell 2 is a possibility as his team is trying to work out a story for the sequel.

Here there be spoilers. Consider yourself warned. After spending years web-slinging around New York City with Spider-Man, Sam Raimi finally returned to his horror roots with Drag Me to Hell. The supernatural horror movie starred Alison Lohman as Christine, a bank loan officer who is cursed when she denies an elderly woman’s request to extend her mortgage. Over the last fourteen years, fans have wondered whether they might get a sequel to the gruesome feature, and Sam Raimi recently teased that Drag Me to Hell 2 is a possibility.

During a Reddit AMA (Ask Me Anything), a Redditor asked Sam Raimi if there was any chance of Drag Me to Hell 2. The director answered: “The team at Ghost House Pictures: Romel Adam and Jose Canas, are trying to come up with a story that would work and I’m anxious to hear if they do!” Of course, this is far from a guarantee that we’ll see a follow-up to the film, but the possibility, no matter how slight, is there.

Given the rather definitive ending of the first movie, Sam Raimi didn’t think that a Drag Me to Hell sequel would work. “Oh, well, if somebody had a good story,” Raimi told Bloody Disgusting in 2019. “I don’t have a story, because in my mind the character got killed, and worse. So I didn’t know how to proceed with the sequel. Usually, for me, I’m left with a character like Bruce Campbell, that I really am interested [in] or like, or a concept that really feels like it needs to continue,” Raimi added. “But this is such a definitive ending that in my mind I didn’t know where to start with a sequel.

The film’s ending paid off the promise of the title, with Christine literally being dragged to hell while her boyfriend (Justin Long) looked on in horror. Justin Long has previously spoken of Drag Me to Hell 2 and what he thinks might have happened to his character. “He would probably, I don’t know, if you witness something like that, you are forever changed,” Long said. “Thankfully, I don’t have any frame of reference as to how. He’d be a disaster. He’d be a mess. He’d be in an institution. And also he’d probably be accused of having killed her. I’m sure there’d be some sort of murder trial. And if that’s his defense? Like, ‘Oh, I saw her getting dragged to Hell.’ He wouldn’t be able to say that in court. He’d be put away. It’s fun to think about.
