So this is…interesting. THR reports that Universial is apparently developing a new Dracula film…but not the kind you'd think. Apparently they're working with filmmaker Chloé Zhao (Nomadland, Eternals), who will write, direct, and produce what is being described as
an original, futuristic, sci-fi Western. Themes of being on society’s fringes, something Zhao has tackled in her previous work, will course through the project’s veins.
Here's what Zhao had to say about the project:
I’ve always been fascinated by vampires and the concept of the Other they embody. I’m very excited…to reimagine such a beloved character.
Honestly? I'm down. When I first heard the idea of a "futuristic" Dracula film, my mind went immediately to that shitty Coolio-led Dracula 3000 movie from 2004. But knowing Zhao's work, and the idea that it'll focus on "society's fringes" and deal with "the concept of the Other" makes me feel like she may actually have a worthwhile take! Either way, at this point, maybe fresh ideas is what this ol' bloodsucker needs?
But what do you guys think? And how would you like to see Dracula rebooted? Either way, sound off below!
