Unfortunately the critical praises which were heaped upon EDGE OF TOMORROW didn't exactly translate into box-office bucks, at least not in our neck of the woods, but fans repeatedly demanded a sequel, and, thanks to a healthier international box-office and a strong home-media performance, it seems likely that we'll get one. Joe Shrapnel and Anna Waterhouse signed on to pen the sequel script earlier this year which will see Doug Liman returning to direct. Speaking of Liman, he recently spoke to Collider to express his excitement for EDGE OF TOMORROW 2, which he calls both a sequel and a prequel.
That is the only sequel that I’m considering doing, and it’s because first of all the story is so amazing—much better than the original film, and I loved and loved the original film—and second of all, it’s a sequel that’s a prequel.
Given how EDGE OF TOMORROW was able to play around with time travel, I'm very curious to discover what Liman has in mind for the sequel/prequel. The director wouldn't give any hints as to what EDGE OF TOMORROW 2 would be about, other than sounding very enthusiastic as he teasingly called it a complete revolution of how sequels are made.
I had these intellectual ideas on how you should make a sequel that are unlike how anybody else makes a sequel, and this script and this idea fit perfectly into that idea. So it’s gonna revolutionize how people make sequels. And again that’s why I try to do things like Invisible that are just, the revolution’s sort of built into the idea. It’s more heresy in the film world for me to pitch things that are sort of unheard of.
Despite the enthusiasm, it may still be some time before we see EDGE OF TOMORROW 2; Tom Cruise has MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE 6 on the horizon, Doug Liman is putting together DARK UNIVERSE a.k.a. JUSTICE LEAGUE DARK and Emily Blunt (assuming she's involved with the sequel, fingers crossed) will be shooting MARY POPPINS RETURNS next year as well. Hopefully everyone will still be just as eager to get cracking on EDGE OF TOMORROW 2 by the time their schedules sync up.
