Doug Jones (HELLBOY) has done a lot of work in horror. One look at his extensive portfolio with (and without) the prosthetic make-up and you’ll understand why Del Toro will give this guy a job anytime. His work includes MIMIC, TALES OF THE CRYPT, THE OUTER LIMITS, HELLBOY, HELLBOY: THE GOLDEN ARMY, DOOM, PAN’S LABYRINTH, QUARANTINE, and LEGION. Now tell me he doesn’t have the chops to make it in horror and I will beg to differ.
However, Doug Jones has landed himself a role in something a bit more serious than your average spook show. This November, Mr. Jones will be dealing with a different type of horror. The film is called THE CANDY SHOP and it’s actually a 30-minute fairytale/parable about the child sex trade. Doug Jones will be playing the villain in the flick as the individual who masterminds the shop. Director Brandon McCormick spins the tale of a candy shop in a time resembling the 1930’s where a candyman (Jones) lures little girls into The Candy Shop…and they don’t come out.
The film was shot in Atlanta where the production company, Whitestone Pictures, is based. According to Whitestone, “over 500 children a month are trafficked into Atlanta, making it the top city in this country for child sex trade.”
Is there a reason to worry? Doug Jones surely thinks so. Whitestone comments: “We are using the film to not only raise awareness but provoke meaningful action towards this issue taking place in our own backyard.” Whitestone Pictures will release the film sometime in November where they will give out free passes in Atlanta. The film associated with the Doorpost Film Project and is being suppoorted by 12Stone® Church and Street Grace.
