Rodo Sayagues and Fede Alvarez have chosen to make the Blind Man, the villain of their 2016 hit Don’t Breathe (watch it HERE), the protagonist in Don’t Breathe 2, which is set to reach theatres on August 13th. Many Don’t Breathe fans have found this to be a questionable decision, despite the fact that Alvarez has made sure to say the Blind Man is not a hero or even an anti-hero in the film, but instead an “anti-villain”. The newly released featurette that’s embedded above digs into the question of what sort of person the Blind Man is, even asking “Is he a monster?”
Sayagues and Alvarez wrote Don’t Breathe and Don’t Breathe 2 together. Alvarez directed the first film, but passed the directing duties on the sequel over to Sayagues. The story they crafted for the sequel is set
several years after the home invasion of the first movie, with the Blind Man living in quiet solace… until his past sins catch up to him.
The Blind Man has been hiding out for years in an isolated cabin and has taken in and raised a young girl orphaned from a house fire. Their quiet existence is shattered when a group of kidnappers show up and take the girl, forcing the Blind Man to leave his safe haven to save her.
Stephen Lang reprises the role of the Blind Man and is joined in the cast by Adam Young, Bobby Schofield, Rocci Williams, and Madelyn Grace.
Sayagues and Alvarez also produced Don’t Breathe 2 with Rob Tapert and genre icon Sam Raimi. When they were promoting the first movie, Raimi said the idea they had for Don’t Breathe 2 was “only the greatest idea for a sequel I’ve ever heard.”
Don’t Breathe 2 has been rated R for “strong bloody violence, gruesome images, and language”.
