Don Murphy will help Triffids make a return in Triffids 3D!

What’s green, angry, and travels through three dimensions? If you’re not sure then don’t feel too bad. The answer hasn’t shown it’s face in over fifty years.

Variety has just gotten word on Don Murphy (TRANSFORMERS, SPLICE) looking for a new project to shadow. Currently the project is none other than DAY OF THE TRIFFIDS. The film will be based on John Wyndham’s 1951 novel of the same name. The novel actually had an older release that faired pretty well as a cult classic.

TRIFFIDS follows the rise of a devastating and aggressive plant species that travels on three legs and wields a poisonous stinger. Sounds like a mix between THE HAPPENING and WORLD OF THE WORLD. Cool beans.

Don Murphy will be joined by Michael Preger in an effort to “faithfully adapt the tale” but there’s a catch? The three legged plant monsters will be making their rounds in not one, or two, but three dimensions. Yes sir, DAY OF THE TRIFFIDS will officially be titled TRIFFIDS 3D. This is noted to be Prefer’s second attempt to bring the TRIFFIDS project up on the big screen. Pregers, however, does have more experience than you realize. He produced the BBC TRIFFIDS series in 2009 which starred Dougray Scott.

“This original classic has still to be successfully envisioned on the screen,” Murphy told the trade. “It is a story that strikes at the heart of what it means to be human — and does so in an intensely cinematic way.”
