The long-awaited Dodgeball sequel is in early development, with Vince Vaughn set to return as gym owner Pete LaFleur.

Dodgeball sequel, Vince Vaughn

If you can dodge a wrench, then you can dodge the curse of the crappy comedy sequel… hopefully. Deadline has reported that Vince Vaughn is set to return for the long-awaited Dodgeball sequel, which is in early development at 20th Century Studios.

The Dodgeball sequel has been scripted by Jordan VanDina (The Binge) and it’s expected that Vince Vaughn will also produce. The original movie starred Vaughn as Pete LaFleur, owner of Average Joe’s Gym. When he defaults on the gym’s mortgage, he enters a Las Vegas dodgeball tournament with his misfit friends in order to win the $50,000 prize to save their cherished gym from being taken over by corporate health fitness chain Globo Gym. Rawson Marshall Thurber wrote and directed the original movie, but it’s unknown if he will be involved in the sequel in any form.

As for who might join Vince Vaughn in the Dodgeball sequel, it’s too early to say, but the original film had quite a fantastic cast. In addition to Vince Vaughn, Dodgeball also starred Ben Stiller, Christine Taylor, Justin Long, Stephen Root, Alan Tudyk, Joel David Moore, Chris Williams, Missi Pyle, Gary Cole, Jason Bateman, William Shatner, and the late Rip Torn.

Justin Long teased last year that Vince Vaughn had an idea for a Dodgeball sequel, but that he was still trying to convince Ben Stiller. “Of course I would love to do it and I hope that it ends up happening, but I think Ben is a little, what he told me on that podcast was that he’s a little trepidatious about doing a sequel to something so beloved, something that people enjoy so much that,” Long explained. “It’s very risky, you don’t wanna s–t on the original, you want something just as good. So I think he’s a little wary of that, of trying to recreate something that was very specific to that time, but I hope he comes around on it. Vince is a very convincing person, so I’m just hoping Vince can convince him with his idea. It’s a funny idea, I don’t wanna say what it is.

The Dodgeball cast did get back together in 2017 for a little mini-reunion to benefit the Stiller Foundation, a nonprofit which supports children around the world by providing educational opportunities to help them realize their full potential.
