Believe it or not, Doctor Who will be celebrating its 60th Anniversary next year, and a new teaser trailer has been released that gives us a small taste of what to expect from the three special episodes.
The Doctor Who 60th Anniversary teaser prominently features the return of David Tennant as the Doctor, but also includes Catherine Tate as Donna Noble, Neil Patrick Harris as a mysterious villain, and more. Tennant previously played the Tenth Doctor in the series, but fans were surprised when Jodie Whittaker’s Thirteenth Doctor regenerated into Tennant at the close of her final episode, The Power of the Doctor.
Showrunner Russell T Davies has confirmed that Tennant is now playing the Fourteenth Doctor, with Ncuti Gatwa set to replace him as the Fifteenth Doctor at the close of these episodes. “If you thought the appearance of David Tennant was a shock, we’ve got plenty more surprises on the way!” Davies said. “The path to Ncuti’s Fifteenth Doctor is laden with mystery, horror, robots, puppets, danger and fun! And how is it connected to the return of the wonderful Donna Noble (to be played again by Catherine Tate)? How, what, why? We’re giving you a year to speculate, and then all hell lets loose!” That’s right, fans will have to wait close to a year, as these episodes won’t debut until November 2023. These specials will also see the BBC and Disney joining forces to make Disney+ the new global home of future seasons of the Doctor Who franchise outside of the UK and Ireland.
When Ncuti Gatwa officially takes on the mantle of the Doctor, he’ll be joined by Coronation Street actress Millie Gibson, who will be playing his new companion, Ruby Sunday. “Whilst still being in total disbelief, I am beyond honoured to be cast as the Doctor’s companion,” Millie Gibson said in a statement. “It is a gift of a role, and a dream come true, and I will do everything to try and fill the boots the fellow companions have travelled in before me. And what better way to do that than being by the fabulous Ncuti Gatwa’s side, I just can’t wait to get started.” Gatwa added, “Millie just is the companion. She is full of talent, strength, she has a cheeky sparkle in her eye and is sharp as a razor. From the moment she walked into the room she captured all of our attention with her effervescence and then solidified that attention with the sheer torque of her talent. This adventure is going to be so wild and so fun, I cannot WAIT to sail the universe with Millie!“
