Sam Raimi’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will make fans of Evil Dead II very happy

As a super-fan of both Marvel and director Sam Raimi, my hype for the upcoming film Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness – which is scheduled to reach theatres on May 6th – is through the roof. I can’t wait to follow Doctor Strange on an adventure through multiple realities, brought to the screen with the trademark Raimi visual style. Speaking with Empire magazine (as reported by Screen Rant and IGN), Marvel Studios mastermind Kevin Feige made sure to say that Raimi fans are going to be pleased with what he has done here, as he was encouraged to put his stamp on it. Feige told them,

We would give (Raimi) notes like, ‘This action is cool – you’re competing with Avengers and Spider-Man – but don’t forget the Sam Raimi part’. You will see just how Sam Raimi it is, in ways that will make fans of Evil Dead II very happy.”

Scripted by Jade Halley Bartlett and Loki head writer Michael Waldron, the film reportedly has the following synopsis (translated from a Japanese source):

The door of the multiverse, full of mystery and madness, opens.

Now that Iron Man and Captain America have left after a fierce battle in Avengers: Endgame, former genius surgeon and the strongest magician of them all, Doctor Strange, is expected to play an active role as a central figure in the Avengers. However, using his magic to manipulate time and space at will with a forbidden spell that is considered the most dangerous has opened the door to a mysterious madness called the Multiverse. To restore a world where everything is changing, Strange seeks help from his ally Wong, the Sorcerer Supreme, and the Avengers’ most powerful Scarlet Witch, Wanda. But a terrible threat looms over humanity and the entire universe that no longer can be done by their power alone. Even more surprising, the greatest threat in the universe looks exactly like Doctor Strange…

Director Sam Raimi, who has expressed a unique world view, will captivate the whole world with overwhelming scale and unprecedented visual experience that will transcend time and space!

Raimi told Empire that Doctor Strange is

very aware that he must not allow Multiversal episodes like we experienced in Spider-Man: No Way Home because he saw how dangerous they were.”

Producer Richie Palmer gave a hint of just how mad this Multiverse of Madness is going to get:

There are infinite worlds out there. Some are identical to ours, and we wouldn’t be able to pick out the differences. Some are animated, and we are 2D cartoon characters with yellow skin like The Simpsons.”

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness stars Benedict Cumberbatch as Doctor Strange, Benedict Wong as Wong, Chiwetel Ejiofor as Mordo, Rachel McAdams as Christine Palmer, Michael Stuhlbarg as Nicodemus West, Elizabeth Olsen as Wanda Maximoff / Scarlet Witch, and Xochitl Gomez as America Chavez, a.k.a. Miss America.. Raimi regular Bruce Campbell is expected to make an appearance as well.
