The MCU has been killing it lately. CIVIL WAR was super successful, DOCTOR STRANGE was awesome, GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 2 looks amazing, and CAPTAIN MARVEL starring Brie Larson is shaping up to be another win for them.
One question mark about CAPTAIN MARVEL, however, is what will be her new origin story? The screenwriters have already mentioned that they'll be changing Captain Marvel's current origin (where she's an Air Force pilot who gets her powers from an alien) because it's too close to DC's GREEN LANTERN.
Well, it looks like there might be a clue in a quick DOCTOR STRANGE easter egg. For those who remember the film (MINOR SPOILERS), right before he gets in his major car accident, Stephen Strange is getting phone calls and texts about different high-profile cases for him to tackle. He dismisses the first few (including a potential reference to IRON MAN 2), until he comes upon one about:
"a woman in her 20s who was struck by lightning – a serious injury complicated by an electronic implant in her brain to help quell her schizophrenia."
Rumors have been spreading that that might be the new origin for Carol Danvers, a.k.a. Captain Marvel.
When approached by Entertainment Weekly about the rumor, director Scott Derrickson said he couldn't confirm or deny it, smiling then whispering:
Remember that Brittany Murphy movie where she goes "I’ll never tell…"
The movie he was referencing was 2001's DON'T SAY A WORD.
Obviously, take that all with a grain of salt for now. We still have three years before CAPTAIN MARVEL comes out, so it might be a little while before we get any confirmation one or another.
Meanwhile, CAPTAIN MARVEL will be flying into theaters March 8th, 2019.
