Polish your Sling Ring and get ready to punch a hole through reality because Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is coming to Disney+ on June 22. In addition to announcing the film’s exclusive streaming premiere, Marvel unleashed a special “fan thank you” video from Benedict Cumberbatch, Elizabeth Olsen, Benedict Wong, and Xochitl Gomez
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is one of the year’s biggest movies, with an estimated global box office total of $879+ million. Springboarding off the success of Marvel’s Spider-Man: No Way Home, Multiverse of Madness finds Doctor Strange venturing into the unknown and teaming with mystical allies, both old and new, for a mind-bending adventure across alternate realities.
Sam Raimi directs the film, and Kevin Feige is the producer. Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso, Eric Hauserman Carroll, Scott Derrickson, and Jamie Christopher serve as executive producers. Michael Waldron wrote the screenplay.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness combines horror with superhero shenanigans to make one of Marvel‘s most terrifying and ambitious films yet. The film is a critical and commercial success and sets up exciting new threads for the MCU to explore as Phase 4 continues. Speaking of new threads, Marvel promises that Doctor Strange will return in future films, and he’ll be bringing Charlize Theron’s Clea along for the ride.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness writer Michael Waldron told Deadline‘s Hero Nation podcast that they always wanted to introduce Clea to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. “In the comics you could say [that Clea is] the great love of Doctor Strange, but really in a lot of ways is his formidable equal as a sorcerer herself,” Waldron said. “Her backstory is fascinating. She’s the niece of Dormammu, the giant floating head from the first movie. And so, they have a lot of great adventures in the comics, and we knew we wanted to introduce her, but it felt like we had to close the book to some extent on his love story with Christine Palmer, Rachel McAdams’ character.” Charlize Theron is a major star, so Marvel obviously has some big plans for the character. It remains to be seen just when Clea will appear in the MCU again, but the post-credit scene could be setting the stage for Doctor Strange 3.
