Of all the heroes that can be irresponsible at times, I never would have guessed that Doctor Strange would be the one that Marvel thinks is in need of a babysitter.
It's been announced that The Baby-Sitters Club actress Xochitl Gomez is joining the cast of Marvel's DOCTOR STRANGE IN THE MULTIVERSE OF MADNESS in an undisclosed role. She'll join Benedict Cumberbatch, Benedict Wong, and Chiwetel Ejiofor, who are expected to reprise their roles as Dr. Stephen Strange, Wong, and Karl Mordo, respectively, from Scott Derrickson's 2016 original film. Elizabeth Olsen will also reprise her role as Scarlet Witch, aka Wanda Maximoff, for a storyline that Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige has said will connect with her Disney+ series WandaVision.
Marvel has yet to comment on Gomez's casting and the plot for the forthcoming sequel has yet to be revealed.
Sam Raimi is replacing original director Scott Derrickson, who earlier this year exited the project, citing creative differences. Derrickson is still an executive producer on the sequel, which bears a script written by Jade Halley Barlett and Michael Waldron.
Do you have any guesses as to who Gomez might play in the new film? I know Doctor Strange's comic book universe quite well, and I'm coming up empty for this one. Gomez strikes me as too young for the part of Zelma Stanton, who in the pages of Doctor Strange is a librarian who after seeking help from the good doctor joins him for a series of bizarre adventures. Beyond that, I've got nothing. If you have any ideas be sure to give us a shout in the comments section below.
For the moment, DOCTOR STRANGE IN THE MULTIVERSE OF MADNESS is slated for a March 25, 2022, theatrical release.
