Are you a good writer? Do you love movies? Do you have time to spare? Are you passionate about film, TV and everything Pop Culture? If so, you may just be the ideal candidate to help fortify our JOBLO.COM MOVIE NEWS SECTION (the section that you are in right now), so take a look at the requirements below and see if you're ready, able and wanting to join the JoBlo.com team!
Position: News Editor
What is it exactly? You would be in charge of finding, writing and putting together movie news stories every day of the week (Monday to Friday) — pictures and all (your photo skills are very important!). The person(s) we hire for this gig would be asked to search out the most relevant, interesting, fun and cool stories as they relate to film and TV (as well as gaming, collectibles or anything buzzworthy), put them together in an entertaining and informative manner and provide for at least 3-4 stories a day.
The shift available is the MORNING SHIFT (8 am – Noon) Eastern Time Zone. If you're not available during those hours every morning from Monday-Friday, please do NOT apply.
Do I need to be living in a certain area to get this job? Not at all. This job is open to anyone from any country, any city, any street, any gas station, residence, warehouse, farmhouse, henhouse, outhouse and doghouse… 😉 As long as you've got a solid connection to the Internet, email and know what's going on in the movie world, you're a candidate.
How much does this job pay? This is a part time gig that pays a quarterly fee. Nothing that would make you quit your day job, of course, but a solid enough amount to compensate for your work. If you end up working out, many more opportunities can open up, be it for columns, videos, junkets and/or set visits, all of which add to your quarterly rate. In the end, you WILL be paid to write about movies, TV shows and all the crazy/cool stuff that's going on in the industry.
What is required of this post?
-
You must be available during all 4 hours of your shift every day from 8 – 12 pm/NOON EST every morning from Monday to Friday. This is the most important requirement. You MUST be present for all four hours of the shift and you cannot work into the following shift (i.e. you must have ALL your daily stories done by close of your shift)
-
You must be serious about your application, the vacant position and be at least 18 years old. That's it. All races, genders, sexual orientations, etc. are encouraged to apply. Your passion about film and the ability to write about it to our readers is the most important thing.
-
You must be an excellent writer, bar-none. If you send us an email with spelling and grammar errors, it will not be considered. Our kind of humor helps as well, but professionalism is even more important.
-
You also need to have some great photo manipulation experience (ex: Photoshop) as you would need to crop and insert pictures into your stories, etc… (or any other picture editing program). You have to be comfortable cropping, editing, fooling around with pictures! You must understand how to get high res images and create attractive, eye-catching, and cool graphics.
-
You must have basic .html skills, although we also have a WYSIWYG back-end, so it's not a make/break thing. No elaborate skills, just the basics.
-
Experience with videos would also be a great asset (not required, though). We have a vast YouTube networks of channels that comprise more than 3 million subscribers and about 3 billion views. Knowing YouTube, how to embed videos, etc. will be part of your daily routine.
-
All social media experience will also be considered an added asset, so please mention any of your experiences using Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, Reddit, etc.
-
You must be able to commit to this job for at least a period of 12 months and obviously be present during your entire shift each day. You will be on a 3-month probationary period once hired, after which you'll be added to the staff roster if the position is working out.
-
EXTRA BONUS: If you're a fan of JoBlo.com, please mention that as well; how long you've been on the site, etc…
How do I apply?
Send us a direct email and include in it why you think you would be ideally suited for this post.
Also, include your full name, age, geographical location, as well as a few writing samples SPECIFIC to what you'd be doing on this site. DO NOT send us only links to your personal blog or papers you wrote in college. Preferably short news stories in the same vein as our articles here.
IMPORTANT: If you make it to the "finals", we will ask you to write stories for ONE FULL WEEK along with the rest of the finalists. You will be required to submit up to 3 stories per day for our review. We will make our decision based off the work you do during this week. Your timeliness, professionalism, grammar, attention to detail, picture editing, etc. will all come into play here.
MAKE SURE TO COVER ALL OF THE ABOVE REQUIREMENTS! PLEASE DO NOT WRITE US A BOOK! We receive hundreds of applications for these gigs, so succinctness is a definite "plus" for us!
