It goes without saying that Quentin Tarantino is one of the most exciting and brilliant writer-directors living today. Since he broke big all the way back in 1992, cinephiles anticipate new Tarantino movies like the way sneakerheads await new Air Jordans. Tarantino’s movies are notable for their quirky melding of ultraviolence and comedy, their outstanding casts imbued with Quentin’s patented clever dialogue, and as of late, for the way they rewrite history to make us revel in an alternate universe where good triumphs over evil. Even though Tarantino has sworn to be retiring after 10 movies — yes, Kill Bill counts as 1 movie — we hope the filmmaker doesn’t make retirement permanent.
Everyone has their own ranking of QT’s movies — never an easy venture, mind you — but today we’re focused on two of his later classics: 2009’s Inglourious Basterds, and 2012’s Django Unchained. Both Oscar-winning movies are bold, frequently outrageous, suspenseful, and darkly comedic, not to mention endlessly watchable. But which one would win in a good old-fashioned shootout? Let’s find out as we pit bounty hunters against Nazi killers only here on… FACE OFF!
This episode of Face Off is written by Eric Walkuski, narrated by Dave Davis, and edited by John Nguyen. But don’t let us have the final word — tell us in the comments which Tarantino flick is your pick — Django Unchained or Inglourious Basterds?
