It’s no secret that there’s been an ongoing battle for the rights to Spider-Man between Disney and Sony over the past several years. One way or another, both companies have managed to share the character, but not without stipulations. At some point, you have to wonder if one studio or the other will claim sole ownership of Spidey and his pals.
Well, according to Giant Freakin Robot, the time for Spider-Man to find a permanent home may soon be at hand. GFR is reporting that Disney is in the midst of putting an offer together to purchase Spider-Man and his associated characters from Sony. Before we go any further, please take whatever is said in this article with a grain of salt. After all, we’ve heard versions of this story before, and there are no details concerning what Disney plans to offer Sony for the acquisition.
As we all know, Sony is fairly covetous when it comes to its golden goose, Spider-Man. The character has made them millions over the past several years, and they have big plans to expand their Spider-Man Universe with films like Kraven the Hunter and Venom: Let There Be Carnage. The studio is also in the process of making a sequel to Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, which is arguably the best Spider-Man movie, as well as one of the greatest animated films of all time.
The way Giant Freakin Robot tells it, Disney’s move may be to purchase Sony’s film division outright. There’s also a possibility that Disney will make an offer to purchase Sony wholesale, which would pave the way for an epic merger. Obviously, this would be a monumental move within the entertainment industry. In addition to its film division, Sony also lays claim to an expansive music and video game library, among other aspects of its business. What does that deal even look like? How much would it cost? Are Mickey Mouse’s pockets truly that deep? Probably.
One thing is for certain, Spider-Man does whatever a spider can to make money. The character is practically a web-slinging ATM at the moment, and fans are always clamoring for more. Personally, I want to see Tom Holland’s Spider-Man team up with Iman Vellani’s Ms. Marvel at some point in time. The two characters have more in common than you’d think, and their comic book chemistry has been the stuff of legend for many years.
What do you think of this rumor? How much do you think Disney would have to shell out for the sole rights to Spider-Man and his associated characters? $5 billion? More than that? Would Sony take the bait? Let us know what you think in the comments section below.
