Disney reportedly developing Honey, I Shrunk the Kids reboot with Josh Gad

Over a year ago, Disney announced that they would be exploring their library of titles in order to develop reboots for their upcoming streaming service. One of those possibilities was a reboot of HONEY, I SHRUNK THE KIDS, the classic 1989 comedy which starred Rick Moranis as an eccentric inventor who mistakenly shrinks his own children.

According to /Film, Disney is indeed developing a reboot of HONEY, I SHRUNK THE KIDS which is going by the title of SHRUNK, but it seems that the project is looking at a theatrical release instead of serving as a Disney+ exclusive. Josh Gad (BEAUTY AND THE BEAST) has reportedly signed on to star in the film, which apparently won't be a reboot at all, but rather take place in the same universe as the original movies. Josh Gad will play Nick Szalinski, the son of Rick Moranis' character, who, much like his father, accidentally shrinks his kids. Given how much visual-effects have evolved in the thirty years since the original film, I can only imagine just how impressive the miniature world could be this time around. Maybe Disney could pull some strings and get Ant-Man (Paul Rudd) to make a cameo. The studio is currently searching for a director to helm the project, but it's important to note that nothing is official just yet, so be sure to keep your grain of salt handy.

I haven't seen the original film since I was a kid, but I recall having fond memories which probably makes me a prime candidate for a nostalgia-fueled reboot/sequel. HONEY, I SHRUNK THE KIDS went on to spawn two sequels, HONEY, I BLEW UP THE KID and HONEY, WE SHRUNK OURSELVES!, as well as a TV series and several theme-park attractions.
