Disney+ is slated to launch on November 12th, bringing with it a large catalogue of movies and TV shows, but there are also plenty of original projects being developed for the streaming service as well. During Disney's recent quarterly earnings call, Disney CEO Bob Iger said that several 20th Century Fox franchises will be reimagined for Disney+, including HOME ALONE, CHEAPER BY THE DOZEN, NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM, and DIARY OF A WIMPY KID.
Bob Iger stated that these franchises will be "reimagined for a new generation," but it's not clear at this time whether they will be features or series. The original film in the HOME ALONE franchise revolved around Kevin McCallister (Macaulay Culkin), a young boy accidentally left home alone when the rest of his family take off on their vacation. When a pair of thieves attempt to burgle the house, Kevin is forced to defend himself and his home with a series of elaborate booby traps. Culkin and much of the cast and crew would return for HOME ALONE 2: LOST IN NEW YORK, but the franchise soon devolved into a series of poorly received sequels. While nothing will likely touch the original film, I'm curious to see how Disney plans on reimagining this slapstick violence for a new generation. Take this with a grain of salt for now, but Collider's Jeff Sneider added that he's heard rumblings that instead of a young boy going to war with a pair of thieves, the HOME ALONE reboot will follow a husband and wife who go to war with a young boy who has stolen something from them. I don't know, swinging a full paint-can into the face of a child doesn't quite have the same comedic ring to it.
