Disney developing Aladdin spinoff for Disney+ focused on Prince Anders

Disney's live-action adaptation of ALADDIN was one of several films from the studio to gross over $1 billion worldwide this year, so it's no surprise that they're looking to return to Agrabah. According to THR, Disney is developing an ALADDIN spinoff centered around Prince Anders, the scene-stealing suitor and potential husband for Jasmine who hailed from the kingdom of Skånland.

The studio has tapped Jordan Dunn and Michael Kvamme to pen the script for the Prince Anders spinoff, which will find Billy Magnussen (NO TIME TO DIE) reprising the role. The actor also played a part in getting the project off the ground as he was the one who approached producers with an idea for the story and was involved in meeting with potential writers. The spinoff project is still in the early stages at this point and is being developed for the Disney+ streaming service.

This isn't the only ALADDIN follow-up which Disney has in the works, as they're also in the early stages of developing a proper sequel. Earlier this year, ALADDIN producer Dan Lin expressed his enthusiasm for a sequel.

We’d love to. People clearly loved the movie and watched it multiple times and we get lots of fan letters and people asking us to make Return [of] Jafar, and I can just tell you that we’re in early stages right now, but we’re certainly talking about another movie. Like with Aladdin, it will not be a straight remake of any movie that’s been made before, so we’re looking at 'where’s the best way to go with these characters.'

"The audience response has really touched us in thinking about where we can go with these stories," Lin added. "And we feel like these characters have more adventures in store." The original animated film spawned two direct-to-video sequels, THE RETURN OF JAFAR and ALADDIN AND THE KING OF THIEVES, so it's not completely out of the realm of possibility that they'd want to do the same with the live-action film. Should a sequel materialize, Dan Lin hopes that ALADDIN director Guy Ritchie will return as well. "Yeah, I think that’s certainly the hope," Lin said. "He made this movie for his kids. They loved Aladdin, both the original animated movie and the Broadway musical, and they wanted him to make a movie that they could see. So he certainly loved the experience, I think both he and Will Smith — even before the box office success, they said it was the best filmmaking experience of their lives and they had so much fun doing it. And we’d love to have Guy back and get the team back together. If we do another Aladdin movie, we’d certainly love to have him at the helm."
