Disney confirms Frozen 2 is officially in development

When FROZEN hit theaters in 2013, it exploded as one of Disney’s biggest hits ever. Fast-forward a little over a year later and little kids are going crazy over a short film featuring Elsa and Anna premiering in front of CINDERELLA. FROZEN filmmakers Chris Buck and Jennifer Lee have repeatedly said that they would not make a sequel until they had the right story. It looks like that time is now.

During their shareholder conference call, Disney CEO Bob Iger and John Lasseter have revealed that the studio is now actively developing FROZEN 2. Aside from the fact that Buck and Lee will be involved, no further details about the sequel were announced. Disney has never been quick to announce sequels to their animated properties like other studios have been, likely due to the lead-up needed in creating these movies. A live action film can be put together in short order but an animated feature requires a lot of manpower to fully realize.

Lasseter said the following about FROZEN 2.

“We enjoyed making Frozen Fever so much and being back in that world with those characters. Jennifer Lee and Chris Buck have come up with a great idea for a sequel and you will be hearing a lot more about it and we’re taking you back to Arendelle. We are so excited about that.”

FROZEN has expanded in every conceivable direction over the last year: books, soundtracks, costumes, toys, video games, and even a story arc on ABC’s ONCE UPON A TIME. There has been talk of a Broadway musical and more spin-offs of the Best Animated Feature Oscar winner. The movie has grossed a billion dollars worldwide which means the sequel will probably match that or make more.

FROZEN 2 has no release date yet, but you can see FROZEN FEVER playing in front of CINDERELLA this Friday.
