For those who expected Joe and Anthony Russo to translate the success they had with CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER and, hopefully, CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR, into a gig helming more Marvel Studios projects, that may have just changed with the news that the siblings have entered into a three year first look deal with Sony. The news broke today via Deadline.
The Russos released this statement about the deal.
“We’re thrilled to make a home at Sony Pictures, and to be partnering with the entire team. The studio has created an environment that is not only collaborative, but truly filmmaker-friendly and we’re excited to begin developing both new and ambitious material with them.”
While a first look deal doesn't mean that the Russos are locked into making films solely for Sony, it does increase the likelihood that their original projects will end up there rather than Disney. These projects will also include scripts, television series, and other projects aside from feature films, but it likely means CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR may be their last big deal with Disney. Coincidentally, The Russos will now get to include Spider-man in CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR while Sony will get to relaunch the superhero in a new series of films in just a couple of years. The Russos deal starts in April. Makes you think, doesn't it?
CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR hits theaters on May 6, 2016.
