THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 just kicked off production a few days ago and director Marc Webb is not looking to let us forget it. The director has been tweeting a pic a day since the start and yesterday saw a picture of a metallic locker with the number 14 on it. For those who are familiar with the Ultimate Spider-Man comics, a similar metallic locker discovered by Peter Parker and Eddie Brock housed the original symbiote invention created by Peter’s parents to cure cancer, which eventually bonded to Brock and became…you guessed it…Venom.
Webb included the hashtag “happy birthday” in his tweet, but did not specify to whom. However, the folks at Crave Online, who originally made this connection, found that February 6th, the day the tweet was sent, is actually the birthday of Dane Dehaan, who is cast as Harry Osborn in the sequel. Posting that along the pic could mean many things; misdirection, unrelated accident, or, well, that Dane Dehaan is Venom.
That would certainly be going in another direction, and an interesting one at that. I was more than underwhelmed by THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN, which leaves me little to lose with the sequel. However, since we’re (hopefully) done with the tired origin business, perhaps we’ll get to see ol’ Spidey throw down with some serious villains this time out, instead of that Geicko Lizard in the last one.

Whatever the case, I’m much more intrigued with this sequel than I was with the original. Fingers crossed that Webb and co. can really bring something new this time out. And, personally speaking, I’d be totally down with Dehaan taking on the snarl-toothed Venom, even if it happens in the end credits.
THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN, starring Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Jaimie Foxx, Dane Dehaan, Colm Feore, Martin Sheen, Sally Field, Paul Giamatti, and Shailene Woodley is set to swing into theaters on May 2, 2014.
