What did everyone think of the first look at Electro from THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2? The Mr. Freeze comparisons in the Strike Back made me chuckle, but hopefully Jamie Foxx's performance won't have the same level as cheese as Arnold Schwarzenegger's in BATMAN AND ROBIN.
THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 will have it's Comic-Con panel today that should reveal more about the film (and possibly future plans), but until then we do have this interview from Movies.com with Marc Web. The director talked a little about how more than one film was always the plan for Spider-Man, and how there will be story arcs that carry from one movie to the next:
There's always been a plan to extend this universe. To make a series of films that were interrelated and weren't purely episodic. That there were certain ongoing stories that were going to play out over multiple films. So, that's always been in the works and there's been some early talks about the nature of what those next two movies are. It's too early to talk about too many of the details, but if you pay attention to this film that's coming out, you may get a feeling and sense of what's to come in the future.
Sony announced a third and fourth movie last month, but we don't know if Marc Webb will be directing those films or not. Webb was asked if he would be back to direct three and four, and while he doesn't exactly answer the question, he does say there are things he has thought about for the next two films
The fourth one was a little bit of a surprise. We always talked about there being a set of three movies, but there may be elements that expand outside Spider-Man that could fulfill that fourth film.
Could one of those "elements that expand outside Spider-Man" be a spin-off with Black Cat? The character has been rumored to appear in THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 or a future film and is a fan favorite. Webb went on to talk about Electro and how powerful the villain will be in the film:
Electro is a fantastically cinematic villain and there's something truly terrifying and godlike about his powers. And that's something that's been fun to develop and conceive of; not only visually, but conceptually how what happens when this creature, who's mythological in scope, is unleashed in New York City … the visual spectacle of it is gonna be fantastic. We're doing some terrible things to Times Square, but it's gonna be fun to watch.
There are a lot of villains (or at least potential villains) in THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2, and we all know what happened the last time too many bad guys were crammed into one Spider-Man movie. This was pointed out to Marc Webb in the interview, and the director was asked what his plans are for his film so it doesn't end up like SPIDER-MAN 3.
One of the things about Spider-Man that's really fun is that the people who become villains often don't start out as villains. Most of the relationships are based in love[?] in some ways. We're teasing out certain characters that may not be his main foes… but the main villain is going to be Electro.
And if you are one of those fans that is worried that Rhino (Paul Giamatti) won't have his classic horn: relax. Marc Webb confirms that the character will have one in THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2. Who knew Rhino had such a loyal following?
THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 with Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Jamie Foxx, Paul Giamatti, Dane DeHaan, Chris Cooper, Sally Field, and Colm Feore swings into theaters May 2nd, 2014.
