Thanks to the success of FURIOUS 7, James Wan has become Hollywood's latest red-hot director, and Deadline is reporting Wan is in talks with Sony to helm a Robotech movie. The studio recently acquired the live-action film rights to the animated series, and while talks are still in the early stages, Deadline has heard that "Wan is all for the opportunity to originate a franchise" like he did with Warner Bros. and New Line's THE CONJURING.
If James Wan does take the ROBOTECH directing gig, it could be a while before he starts working on the project. The Wrap's Jeff Sneider is claiming that Wan is set to direct AQUAMAN for Warner Bros. and DC. Sneider says the director will tackle the comic book movie after THE CONJURING 2, which will start production sometime this summer. Earlier this month a rumor surfaced that Wan was being sought for AQUAMAN.
I'm not sure if Sony is willing to wait for James Wan to film THE CONJURING sequel and AQUAMAN (if Sneider's scoop is true) before moving on to ROBOTECH, but apparently "he and Sony are going to try and make this work." The director is fielding a lot of offers though, so it'll be interesting to see what he picks for his post-THE CONJURING 2 project.
THE CONJURING 2 will be in theaters on June 10, 2016, and AQUAMAN is scheduled to be released on July 27, 2018.
