Godzilla needs to table concerns over which enemy kaiju he might have to throw down with for his sequel. Finding a new director for that movie is going to have to take priority.
Gareth Edwards has departed GODZILLA 2, leaving the director's chair vacant for the big-budget blockbuster follow-up, with the news coming a few days after Warner Bros. pushed back the release date for the film into to 2019. According to Deadline, the split was amicable between Edwards, Warners and Legendary, with the filmmaker said to want to focus on a few smaller projects once he is finished with ROGUE ONE in the STAR WARS Galaxy. Back-to-back tentpoles wasn't exactly his cup of tea.
Edwards was able to establish a new universe for Godzilla to live in that turned out much better than the last time an attempt was made to Americanize the King of the Monsters. However, the real fun is going to begin with the sequel, with some adversaries introduced and the groundwork laid for his head-to-head with King Kong, dated for 2020. As a result, don't expect the film to be on the hook for finding a new director for too long. There are sure to be plenty of capable candidates hoping for the chance to go play in this world.
