Well, for those looking forward to seeing director Edward Zwick’s supernatural epic THE GREAT WALL anytime soon, it looks like you’ll be waiting a bit longer. Zwick is set to direct PAWN SACRIFICE, a script based on real events, which follows chess prodigy Bobby Fischer while competing in the World Chess Championship against Russian champ Boris Spassky during the Cold War-era. Fischer would later go into exile, toeing the line of genius and madness for the duration of his life.
Maguire will produce and star as Fischer. Zwick was expected to begin production on THE GREAT WALL, a story “about British warriors who happen upon the hurried construction of the massive wall. As night falls, the warriors realize that the haste in building the wall isn’t just to keep out the Mongols — there is something inhuman and more dangerous.” WALL was to star Benjamin Walker and Henry Cavill, but now awaits new financing and a new start date.
More as both of these projects develop (or don’t).
Maguire will next be seen in Baz Luhrman’s THE GREAT GATSBY and Jason Reitman’s LABOR DAY.
