Colin Trevorrow is an interesting choice to direct JURASSIC PARK 4. SAFETY NOT GUARANTEED is a fantastic film but obviously JURASSIC PARK 4 will be bigger in…well everything. How will he handle working on a project with a huge budget, tons of special effects and action heavy scenes?
Schmoes Knows interviewed Trevorrow at the 2013 Saturn Awards and asked him how his early work on JURASSIC PARK 4 compares to what he was doing for his first feature film:
Surprisingly it’s not that different from SAFETY NOT GUARANTEED. We have a very small team who we’re working with right now. It’s incredible to have Steven (Spielberg), who’s done this for decades and has such an incredible film knowledge and this understanding of the language of story – in a way that for us, is very refreshing. It’s not like getting notes from a studio executive. It’s really trying to crack this and make it the best movie it can be.
I think Colin Trevorrow is smart enough to take some advice (the good stuff anyway) from the people around him that might be a little more familiar with certain aspects of filmmaking. I'm not saying Trevorrow lacks talent or doesn't know what to do with a big budget film but this is a huge jump he's making.
We brought you some exclusive details on the story for JURASSIC PARK 4 and a lot of people commented that it sounded very similar to the first film. JURASSIC PARK 4 might not be an official reboot but it does sound like they want to really embrace the feel of first film while telling a new story based on Trevorrow's comments about the next movie:
We don’t want to create a new scoop here [laughs], but we really want to honor what came before us. We are very aware of how much a certain generation especially cares about this movie and we talk about it all the time in conversations. It’s not about us, it’s not about our careers, it’s – how do we make something that can stand against the first JURASSIC PARK.
Maybe JURASSIC PARK 4 shouldn't happen but it is. And if that means it'll be more like the first movie than I'm for it. It does sound a hell of a lot better than weaponized dinosaurs that's for sure.
JURASSIC PARK 4 is scheduled to be released Summer 2014.
