While it appears that after STAR WARS: EPISODE VII – THE FORCE AWAKENS kicks off a new trilogy of films in the STAR WARS saga, we are still waiting to hear if the rumored spin-offs focused on the origins of Han Solo, Yoda, and Boba Fett are coming to fruition. With so many characters worthy of their own films, it never occurred to anyone but Samuel L. Jackson to further the adventures of purple lightsaber-wielding Jedi master Mace Windu. Until now.
Director A.J. Edwards recently took part in a Reddit AMA concerning his directorial debut THE BETTER ANGELS. The black and white indie tells the story of Abraham Lincoln's youth and comes with Terrence Malick's seal of approval all over the poster and trailer. Critics have not been as kind to the film, but in keeping with Lucasfilm's recent hiring of filmmakers with small filmographies like Gareth Edwards and Josh Trank, it seemed fair to ask Edwards if there was any truth to rumors of his involvement with the STAR WARS spin-offs. Here was his answer.
Talking about it, not able to say a lot yet. It will focus on Mace Windu.
While the first part is certainly interesting, I am almost positive he was joking about the Mace Windu part. Edwards most definitely knew he would send the Internet into troll mode with a comment like that, but it does beg our attention as to whether a Mace Windu movie is even worth the effort. There has been a lot of work done to date to drive home the connection between STAR WARS: EPISODE VII – THE FORCE AWAKENS and the original trilogy rather than adding focus on the maligned prequels, but pretty much any origin story about Obi Wan Kenobi, Han Solo, or anyone else would need to take place prior to the events of the original trilogy, putting them closer to the prequels than the sequels.
While this may be nothing more than a mean joke, what do you think of the prospect of a Mace Windu solo adventure? Should Samuel L. Jackson be brought back? Or, could it be a sequel. After all, we never did see his body after Emperor Palpatine tossed him out that window…
STAR WARS: EPISODE VII – THE FORCE AWAKENS hits theaters on December 18, 2015.
