Disney and Lucasfilm's first live-action Star Wars TV series, The Mandalorian, hasn't yet been released, but Disney CEO Bob Iger announced today that they're developing a second live-action TV series which will see Diego Luna returning to reprise his role of Cassian Andor, last seen in ROGUE ONE: A STAR WARS STORY.
In a statement, Diego Luna said, "Going back to the Star Wars universe is very special for me. I have so many memories of the great work we did together and the relationships I made throughout the journey. We have a fantastic adventure ahead of us, and this new exciting format will give us the chance to explore this character more deeply." The Cassian Andor series will debut on Disney's upcoming streaming service, now known as Disney+, and production is expected to begin next year on what is being described as a "rousing spy thriller will explore tales filled with espionage and daring missions to restore hope to a galaxy in the grip of a ruthless Empire." Given Cassian's fate at the end of ROGUE ONE, it's clear that this will be a prequel series, which means that Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones) likely won't be involved, but, it's a good bet that we might just see Cassian's buddy K-2SO (Alan Tudyk) turn up, which is all the more reason to get excited.
What do you think of spending more time with Cassian Andor for a new Star Wars TV show? Which other characters do you think we might see?
As for The Mandalorian, which is said to take place several years after the events of RETURN OF THE JEDI but decades before THE FORCE AWAKENS, production on the series got underway several weeks ago. "After the stories of Jango and Boba Fett, another warrior emerges in the Star Wars universe," reads the official synopsis. "The Mandalorian is set after the fall of the Empire and before the emergence of the First Order. We follow the travails of a lone gunfighter in the outer reaches of the galaxy far from the authority of the New Republic."The Mandalorian will be written and executive produced by Jon Favreau, with the first episode set to be helmed by Dave Filoni (Star Wars Rebels). Further episodes will be directed by Deborah Chow (Jessica Jones), Rick Famuyiwa (DOPE), Bryce Dallas Howard (SOLEMATES), and Taika Waititi (THOR: RAGNAROK).
