Did Ivan Reitman reveal that Ghostbusters 3 is actually a remake?

GHOSTBUSTERS III is one of the biggest inducers of blue balls for movie lovers. We keep getting hope that it will happen and then right when things look good, it collapses under itself. Most recently, we were told by Dan Akyroyd that a new screenplay had been commissioned and things were looking good. By good, he means as good as a GHOSTBUSTERS movie could be without Bill Murray involved.

The latest news for GHOSTBUSTERS comes courtesy of an interview with Ivan Reitman over at Collider. Reitman was asked about his involvement with the GHOSTBUSTERS sequel as well as the TWINS sequel:

Well, I’d like to go forward and make new things. I think GHOSTBUSTERS probably should be remade, if we can get it all right. We’re working on it, so we’ll see. With TRIPLETS, I’m quite nervous about it. I think it’s somebody’s commercial idea, and usually that’s a scary thought. There’s no writer, and there’s no idea yet. I think that was more of a press release than anything else.

Neither sounds like a ringing endorsement. But, his GHOSTBUSTERS comment does raise some questions. Is he no longer involved with the third movie or is he saying they should scrap the sequel and go back and start over with the same plot?

I would not be against a full reboot as long as Reitman, Ramis, and Aykroyd had some sort of producer input on the project. You could do away with trying to follow the first two films and just have a clean slate. Granted, I doubt most fans would give it the time of day, but it could go the way of JJ Abrams STAR TREK and actually have a nice identity that is distinct from the source while also being respectful of it/

What do you think: reboot or sequel for GHOSTBUSTERS?
