Dexter Morgan, the serial killer with a heart of gold, is back! Showtime announced today that they have ordered a new ten-part limited-series of Dexter that will find Michael C. Hall returning to the role. Clyde Phillips, who served as showrunner and executive producer of the first four season of the series, will also be back. Gary Levine, Co-President of Entertainment at Showtime, said the following in a statement:
Dexter is such a special series, both for its millions of fans and for Showtime, as this breakthrough show helped put our network on the map many years ago. We would only revisit this unique character if we could find a creative take that was truly worthy of the brilliant, original series. Well, I am happy to report that Clyde Phillips and Michael C. Hall have found it, and we can’t wait to shoot it and show it to the world.
Dexter ran for eight seasons on Showtime from 2006 to 2013, and although the series was once highly acclaimed, reception dwindled as it progressed, culminating in a series finale that some believe to be one of the worst in television history. While I think that's a little harsh, it's easier to say that the finale was deeply polarizing. Production on this new limited-series is expected to kick off early next year with a tentative fall 2021 launch. I actually just finished re-watching Dexter with my fiancée earlier this week, and the first words out of her mouth as the final season came to a close were, "They really need to bring that back as a mini-series so they can fix that ending." Wish granted.
Here's your SPOILER warning! The season finale of Dexter found the titular serial killer pulling the plug on his comatose sister Debra (Jennifer Carpenter) and dropping her body into the ocean before driving his boat into a tropical storm and faking his death. He had also sent his son Harrison and love interest Hannah (Yvonne Strahovski) to Argentina, promising that he would meet up with them later, but the final shots of the series found Dexter working for a lumber company in Oregon and looking miserable with his new beard. While I didn't dislike the final seasons of the series as much as some did, I can admit that they paled in comparison to those early seasons, so it's good to know that Clyde Phillips is back onboard to (hopefully) bring Dexter the conclusion he deserves.
Are you still down for more Dexter? What are your hopes for this revival series?
