Tomorrow, director Emma Tammi's werewolf movie Blood Moon will be released on the Hulu streaming network as the season 2 finale of the Blumhouse anthology series Into the Dark – and while doing press for Into the Dark: Blood Moon, Tammi revealed to Daily Dead that she's currently working on a series adaptation of Daria Polatin's debut novel Devil in Ohio (pick up a copy HERE) for Netflix.
Tammi said,
Coming up, I’ll be directing a new Netflix series—an adaption of the book Devil in Ohio — and have currently been popping in and out of the writers’ room for that project (which has been a total delight)."
Her involvement with Devil in Ohio was reiterated on the USC website ahead of a special USC screening of Into the Dark: Blood Moon that was followed by a live Q&A with filmmakers and cast. Tammi's bio on the event page says she is "attached to EP and direct the pilot of Devil in Ohio for Netflix". So even though Netflix hasn't made an official announcement yet, the information has been put out there and confirmed.
"Based on a true story", Devil in Ohio has the following description:
When fifteen-year-old Jules Mathis comes home from school to find a strange girl sitting in her kitchen, her psychiatrist mother reveals that Mae is one of her patients at the hospital and will be staying with their family for a few days. But soon Mae is wearing Jules's clothes, sleeping in her bedroom, edging her out of her position on the school paper, and flirting with Jules's crush. And Mae has no intention of leaving.
Then things get weird.
Jules walks in on a half-dressed Mae, startled to see: a pentagram carved into Mae's back. Jules pieces together clues and discovers that Mae is a survivor of the strange cult that's embedded in a nearby town. And the cult will stop at nothing to get Mae back.
That sounds interesting to me, and a bit reminiscent of the Wes Craven / Linda Blair TV movie Summer of Fear (a.k.a. Stranger in Our House), which was itself based on a novel by Lois Duncan.
In addition to writing Devil in Ohio, Polatin has also worked as writer and producer on the TV shows Castle Rock and Jack Ryan.
We'll keep you updated on the Devil in Ohio Netflix series as it continues to move forward.
