Details about the Supernatural crossover with Scooby-Doo emerge

Everyone loves a good crossover episode, particularly when it feels as if the two collaborating brands were always destined to form a union with one another. Recently, Entertainment Weekly ran a series of articles in celebration of the CW's long-running SUPERNATURAL horror television series. In addition to scaring up a collection of hilarious photo ops and highlighting why the show is still such a beloved part of pop culture, an interview with show co-runner Andrew Dabb revealed some new details regarding the upcoming SUPERNATURAL and SCOOBY-DOO animated crossover event, which is reportedly scheduled to air during March 2018.

During his time with EW, Dabb told the entertainment news outlet that the idea to pair Scooby and the gang with Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles) Winchester began all the way back when the show was preparing for its fourth season. At the time, the writers had put forth the idea of doing a special animated episode of the show, only, time and money quickly became a factor and the project was shelved. In talking with EW, Dabb remarked, "We have ideas floating around sometimes for years before we use them, and that’s the benefit of being on a long-running show."

Eventually, Dabb took a phone call from his friend Jeremy Adams at Warner Bros. Animation, who at the time had mentioned the words "Scooby-Doo," much to Dabb's interest.  “He was like, ‘Why haven’t they done a crossover with Scooby-Doo?'” After that, Dabb was all like, “That is an excellent question.” Now, thanks to an early season 13 renewal for the spooktacular SUPERNATURAL saga, the show has had enough lead time to make the animated crossover a reality. “The script was finalized and the guys recorded their parts I believe in March of this year and it will air probably about March of next year. It’s going to be an episode of Supernatural with Scooby-Doo in it. It’s not going to be an episode of Scooby-Doo with the guys in it. It’s more adult than your average episode of Scooby-Doo.” Co-showrunner Robert Singer adds, “Scooby is the marquee this year. The script really works. It’s just going to be great.”” Dabb says.

Zoinks! I can recall hearing rumblings of this from way back, but never would have guessed that it would actually happen. As a fan of SUPERNATURAL since the very first episode, and a fan of SCOOBY-DOO for much longer than that, I can't wait to check this episode out when it airs next year. Personally, one of my favorite aspects of SUPERNATURAL is the way in which the show manages to sneak fun events like this one into the mix, every now and again. It's nice to have a long-running program that is wholly aware of what it is and its place within pop culture, so much so that it can afford to present goofy one-offs like this and not be afraid of fans jumping ship. Carry on, you crazy wayward sons!

SUPERNATURAL airs on Thursdays at 8 p.m. ET on The CW.
