Dept. H: Alice Waddington to direct adaptation of Dark Horse comic for Netflix

Who’s ready for an intense whodunit that takes place under the sea? If you raised your hand, get ready, because Alice Waddington (Paradise Hills) is adapting Dept. H for Netflix. Waddington is directing the film based on the thrilling comic book series. The Maze Runner writer T.S. Nowlin will pen the script. Meanwhile, Mike Richardson, Keith Goldberg, and Paul Schwake will produce through Dark Horse Entertainment.

Dept. H hails from New York Times best-selling MIND MGMT creator Matt Kindt and colorist Sharlene Kindt. In the series, Mia is a special investigator hired to uncover possible sabotage taking place at a deep-sea research station. What she finds is a mind-blowing crime scene filled with suspects with terrible secrets, strange deep-sea creatures, and an impending flood. That’s right, folks. It’s an underwater whodunit!

Plans to adapt Dept. H hail from Netflix’s first-look deal with Dark Horse Entertainment. The two studios previously joined forces to bring The Umbrella Academy to the streamer, which recently wrapped production on its third season. Upcoming projects under the deal include a film adaptation of Mystery Girl directed by McG and starring Tiffany Haddish and Lady Killer, which Blake Lively will star in and produce. There’s also an adaptation of Matt Wagner’s Grendel on the way, starring Abubakr Ali as the lead character, Hunter Rose.

The entire run of Dept. H is available to read right now from Dark Horse Entertainment. To purchase your copy of this outstanding series, be sure to visit DarkHorse.com, or ask your local comic shop if they have it in stock. I’m a big fan of Kindt’s work and think that Dept. H is one of his best. It’s an intense read from start to finish and will keep you guessing all the way through. It’s the type of story where anything that can go wrong does. That sounds like a bad thing, but trust me, it makes for a heightened reading experience. I can’t wait to see how this adaptation turns out and for others to experience all the deep-sea deception.
