Earlier this week we heard rumblings that Denis Villeneuve's STORY OF YOUR LIFE starring Amy Adams and Jeremy Renner may have received a name change, but now Paramount Pictures has confirmed that the sci-fi thriller has been retitled ARRIVAL.
The studio has also announced that the film will open wide on November 11, 2016, where it will face off against Ang Lee's BILLY LYNN'S LONG HALFTIME WALK, Warren Beatty's Howard Hughes movie RULES DON'T APPLY, the holiday comedy ALMOST CHRISTMAS, and the Naomi Watts-led psychological thriller SHUT IN.
Based on the Ted Chiang short story and written by Eric Heisserer (FINAL DESTINATION 5, 2011's THE THING), ARRIVAL also stars Forest Whitaker, Michael Stuhlbarg and Tzi Ma, and "takes place after alien crafts land around the world. An expert linguist (Adams) is recruited by the military to determine whether they come in peace or are a threat. As she learns to communicate with the aliens, she begins experiencing vivid flashbacks that become the key to unlocking the greater mystery about the true purpose of their visit." You can check out Paul Shirey's reaction to the trailer that was shown during Paramount's 2016 Cinemacon presentation here.
As for Villeneuve's other upcoming projects, the director will kick off production on the currently untitled BLADE RUNNER sequel next month for its October 6, 2017 release, and he's also planning on doing a big screen adaptation of the Jo Nesbo crime novel The Son with his ENEMY and PRISONERS star Jake Gyllenhaal.
