Denis Villeneuve’s Dune remake gets new writer in the form of Eric Roth

Last Updated on August 2, 2021

I’m super excited for the new DUNE remake. I thought Denis Villeneuve‘s ARRIVAL was the best movie of last year, and BLADE RUNNER: 2049 – a movie that’d normally make me roll my eyes while doing a mocking jerk-off gesture – actually looks pretty amazing. So I’m down for anything Villeneuve is up to, regardless of how excited I am to also see DUNE done with modern effects and a huge budget.

The film has now nabbed a screenwriter, and its veteran scribe Eric Roth. If you don’t recognize his name, you might recognize the movies he’s wrote. Roth’s the guy behind FORREST GUMP, CURIOUS CASE OF BENJAMIN BUTTON, and…THE POSTMAN? To be fair, his track record is a bit spotty (for every INSIDE MAN there’s an EXTREMELY LOUD AND INCREDIBLY CLOSE), but I think he can do it. His best films deal with expansive timeframes, epic moments, and achingly human characters. So there’s hope. And while he hasn’t done sci-fi yet, I feel that could be a good thing, because he’ll have a fresh perspective (similar to Villeneuve’s ARRIVAL). But we’ll see.

But what do you Schmoes think? You as optimistic as I am about this remake? Or do you think it should be fed to the worms? Sound off below!

No official release date yet, but we’ll keep you updated.
