The trailer for Denis Villeneuve‘s BLADE RUNNER 2049 hit earlier this week and proved to be one of the best teasers we’ve seen this year. We were given just enough to spin off some theorize, plus a taste of that classic Vangelis theme. If that wasn’t enough, Entertainment Weekly has some new images that you can check out below. Furthermore, there’s also some interview tidbits in which Villeneuve confirms the R-rating for the film, as well as some other goodies. Take a look!
Denis Villeneuve on BLADE RUNNER 2049’s rating and CGI use:
My producers are finding it fun to remind me that it will be one of the most expensive R-rated independent feature films ever made. I can count on my fingers the amount of times we put a green screen on set. Most of the movie was done on camera, me and Roger Deakins worked very hard to do it that way. My actors were not walking on green screens all day long. CGI is a strong tool for backgrounds and extensions but what is around the actors needs to be as real as possible. When I watch a movie that’s mostly CGI, I’m disengaged.
Regarding another sci-fi film or a sequel to BLADE RUNNER 2049:
I’m doomed, I love sci-fi. I have two more ideas now that I would love to do. [And] Blade Runner could go on… we’ll see how this one goes.
Worries that BLADE RUNNER 2049 might not be the thought-provoking sequel the original deserves have been placated for the time being. Fans have been cautiously optimistic up until now, but with the release of the first trailer and these new images and tidbits, I’d say there’s no stopping the hype train now. It’s going to be a long wait until October, but at least we have something to look forward to!
BLADE RUNNER 2049 will open in theaters on October 6, 2017.
