Deadpool Interviews: Tim Miller, Ed Skrein & writers talk Cable, sequel, etc

We loved DEADPOOL. This wildly entertaining superhero flick with Ryan Reynolds gave us a jolt of pure, unadulterated fun and now it is coming home where you can watch it anytime. Reynolds is electrifying as the "Merc with a Mouth." It also helps he had a great script from Rhett Reese and Paul Werrick with one hell of a great choice with first time feature film director Tim Miller helming the R-rated adventure.

Recently at a junket for the home video release of the film, we spoke to both Miller and producer Simon Kinberg about taking on DEADPOOL. While they didn't want to talk sequel, it is clear they still have a fondness for this character. And speaking of fondness, we also sat down with Ajax himself, Ed Skrein. The actor is one of the coolest guys I've had the pleasure of chatting with. He talked about taking on the role and how it has changed his life when it comes to being recognized.

And if that wasn't enough, we also sat down with both Rhett and Paul in a roundtable discussion. Not surprisingly, one of the hot topics of the conversation was a sequel. With the huge success of the first film, the writing duo were asked about the success of the first film and what was going through their heads at the prospect of a writing part two.

Rhett Reese: Terrified. Extraordinarily jazzed. Extraordinarily excited. But also very daunted because when you are working on something that has a core fanbase of whatever that is, 200,000 or 300,000 people, you know you are going to have to answer to some folks. But I think with the sequel to DEADPOOL, we are going to have to answer to literally now, millions of people. It kind of set a high bar and it’s terrifying to try and get over it. On the bright side, it is extraordinarily exciting. And we think we know this voice and this character really well, and we just have a ton of fun writing it.

Paul Wernick: The most fun we ever have had is writing this character as writers.

When asked about going bigger for the next one, they added.

PW: I think lessons are to be learned from the past and how other comic book movies have done it. But I think DEADPOOL is such a unique world that you don't need to go bigger. You don’t want to go bigger. We don’t want to make a two-hundred million dollar epic superhero DEADPOOL movie. We want to make a fifty million dollar DEADPOOL sequel. I think people tapped into this being a character piece. This was a movie about a broken character, a broken guy, who is just trying to make his way in the world. And I think that we are going to continue that moving forward.

As for branching out into another…

RR: Well, I think the one due paying we had to do in the first one is just making sure it was an origin story, and making sure we got those nuts and bolts in how the character became who he became. I do think free of that, plot wise, we are opening up to some fun choices. We aren’t really constrained as much, we can almost go wherever we want because there is a massive body of material in the comics. We have our own ideas. Ryan has his ideas. So much of the fun of writing DEADPOOL is the freedom. There is the freedom to break rules and do crazy things. And I think the sequel probably provides even more opportunity than the first movie to do that.

PW: I don’t think think the sequel has officially been announced…

RR: Oh, sorry. We are not supposed to be talking about a sequel, yeah, so there is no sequel [Laughing]. It’s kind of like the MATRIX, there is no spoon. There is no glass on the table right now [Laughing]. None of it’s here.

And what about the mention of Cable from the post credits scene?

RR: I hate to say but we probably shouldn’t talk about it. I think that is probably good news from your perspective because that perhaps reveals something that we don’t want to talk about it for fear of revealing too much. We love Cable, we love the character. There is a lot of fun that he’s very serious and he does take on more serious, weighty issues than Deadpool is used to taking on. So I think there is a juxtaposition there that can be fun. We had a lot of fun with Colossus in the first movie just by virtue of him being a foil to Deadpool, with him being a goody two shoes and a straight-shooter and Deadpool being irreverent. And I think Cable offers us the opportunity to provide another really cool and different foil for Deadpool… if we were to make a sequel [Laughing].

PW: And IF Cable were to be in it.
