Superhero fans have been riding high since Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman announced they’re teaming up for Marvel‘s Deadpool 3. The news sent shockwaves throughout the fandom, and I might have peed a little. Just a drop. Nothing too dramatic. At least I had the sense to wear my brown pants. Anyway, Reynolds and Jackman are back with a new video, and this one is full of spoilers about the new film. Well, kind of. You won’t be able to hear any of the gory details because Wham! ‘s “Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go” slices through their audio like Wolverine’s claws through a stack of pancakes dripping with Canadian Maple Syrup.
When the duo announced Jackman’s return as Wolverine for Deadpool 3, fans immediately questioned the project’s timeline and how Logan returns after the character dies in James Mangold’s Logan. It turns out that Logan takes place in 2029, so Deadpool 3 could happen before that. There’s a chance some time-travel shenanigans are involved, but I doubt it. Deadpool 3 is likely covering all its bases to not summon the trolls from beneath their bridges.
While fans are still reacting to the biggest superhero-related news of the year, James Mangold shared a reaction on Twitter that sent many Wolverine die-hards into a berserker-like rage. In his tweet, Mangold posted a GIF from Logan of Wolverine getting impaled on a tree stump, ultimately leading to his death. Fans of the character immediately took umbrage with Mangold’s tweet, with many crying about how he doesn’t hold dominion over the character’s existence. Mangold quickly posted another tweet stating he grasps how these things work and that it was just a joke. He also assured fans that Logan will always have its place, and maybe we should all calm down.
Deadpool 3 will be directed by Shawn Levy from a script by Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick. While speaking with our Alex Maidy earlier this year, Rhett Reese teased, “The MCU is an amazing sandbox to play in. We’ll throw lots of cliches as well because we’re giving it 110% man or taking it one day at a time. It’s the Bull Durham thing. Like we’re taking it one day at a time. We can’t divulge details but suffice it to say that when Ryan and Paul and I are on Zoom together, we are cackling. So, it’s pretty fun.” Although it once seemed unlikely that Hugh Jackman would ever reprise Wolverine’s role, Ryan Reynolds kept pestering his old pal until he agreed to return for Deadpool 3.
The announcement video also revealed that Deadpool 3 will hit theaters on September 6, 2024, slightly less than two years from now. I’m so pumped! Are you excited to see Hugh Jackman return as Wolverine for Deadpool 3?
