Deadpool 3 will bring ol’ Wade Wilson into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and it couldn’t have come at a more exciting time. Now that the MCU is diving into the deep end of the Multiverse, the possibilities are endless. We already know that Deadpool 3 will find Hugh Jackman reprising his iconic role of Wolverine, but the actor may have spilled a tidbit about just how many roles he’ll be playing in the movie.
While speaking with La Parisien (via The Playlist), Hugh Jackman made it sound like he would be playing more than one version of Wolverine in Deadpool 3. “Yes, it will even be a dual role,” Jackman said. “Ryan and I have been friends for twenty years; we have a lot of fun together. We are filming this summer. That’s why I’m so happy to be in Paris right now and to be able to enjoy French gastronomy. Because very soon, I’m going to have to put myself on a strict diet to remake my Wolverine body: steamed chicken and broccoli!“
This “dual role” that Hugh Jackman speaks of could mean just about anything. We could be getting multiple Wolverine variants in Deadpool 3, Jackman could be playing an entirely different role besides Wolverine (perhaps even himself), the actor may have misspoke, or he may have meant something else entirely.
Production on Deadpool 3 is expected to kick off next spring under the direction of Shawn Levy, who teased that the sequel will continue the R-rated, hardcore violence of the first two movies. “We are writing, rewriting, developing, prepping Deadpool every day now,” Levy said. “It is such a blast to laugh every day. It is so delicious to hear and write and come up with these scenes where people are just talking foul. And the violence is in your face and hardcore, and it’s very much a Deadpool movie. And it has Logan in it. And it has Wolverine in it. It’s too fun. I’m having so much fun, and I haven’t even hit the shooting floor yet. […] I have to say, developing a Deadpool movie is one of the most fun creative experiences of my life because it’s not just that it’s rated R. It’s that it’s so filled with self-awareness, and that makes in-writing very, very fun in a way that is unique to that franchise.“
“Oh my God, I’m thrilled,” Ryan Reynolds said of Hugh Jackman returning for Deadpool 3. “It’s like old home week. To get to be on set with one of my closest friends each and every day is a dream come true. But to do it with these two iconic characters side by side, that’s beyond our wildest dreams.” Deadpool 3, or The Wolverine Show featuring Deadpool, is set to hit theaters on November 8, 2024.
