Warner Bros. has announced that New Line's SHAZAM! 2 will superhero-land in theaters on April 1, 2022, a spot previously marked "RSVP" for an untitled WB Event Film.
The original SHAZAM! debuted in theaters this past April, and earned a worldwide total of $364 million at the box office. The family-friendly superhero film was a major hit with younger audiences and introduced Zachary Levi's Shazam! to DC fans across the globe. The original film tells the story of Billy Batson, a streetwise fourteen-year-old foster kid who after an encounter with an ancient wizard, can turn into an adult superhero by shouting the name "Shazam!" When SHAZAM 2 smashes into theaters, fans of superhero cinema can expect Billy, and his extended family of foster children siblings, to battle the forces of evil as a familial force for good.
SHAZAM! 2 will have some mighty stiff competition when it arrives in theaters, seeing as Sony's SPIDER-MAN: INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE 2 is poised to web-swing into cinemas the week before Billy Batson's return to the land of supervillains and cranky wizards.
In what we know about the film so far, Sandberg is expected to return as director, while it's also been reported that Henry Gayden has signed on to pen the script. Meanwhile, Peter Safran is looking to once again produce. It's to be understood that it's still early days for SHAZAM! 2, so we've yet to learn any plot details or info related to the project's official production start. My educated guess is that production will kick up as early as 2020, giving the film's VFX and PR teams plenty of time to work their magic.
With SHAZAM! 2 shooting for an April 2022 release, DC now has three films set for that year, including THE FLASH and AQUAMAN 2.
