I'm playing catch-up on this, because somehow I had missed out on the fact that stunt coordinator and second unit director J.J. Perry is making his feature directorial debut with a vampire action movie for Netflix, and has assembled a hell of a cast for that project. The movie is called Day Shift, and that cast includes Jamie Foxx, Snoop Dogg, Scott Adkins, Dave Franco, Meagan Good, Karla Souza, Eric Lange, Zion Broadnax, Natasha Liu Bordizzo, Oliver Masucci, Steve Howey, and C.S. Lee.
Day Shift has been in production for a couple months already, and judging by the images and videos Perry has shared to his Instagram account, it looks like he and the cast and crew are having a blast making this thing. There's so much dancing happening on the set, you'd think they were making a musical. Several of Perry's Instagram posts can be seen below, and they give a fun look behind-the-scenes.
This is the first produced screenplay for Tyler Tice, whose script received some polishing from Shay Hatten (John Wick: Chapter 3, Army of the Dead). John Wick franchise director Chad Stahelski is producing the movie with Jason Spitz for 87Eleven Entertainment, alongside Shaun Redick and Yvette Yates Redick of Impossible Dream Entertainment. Foxx, Datari Turner, and Peter Baxter are executive producers.
Foxx takes on the role of
a hard-working, blue-collar dad who just wants to provide a good life for his quick-witted daughter, but his mundane San Fernando Valley pool cleaning job is a front for his real source of income, hunting and killing vampires as part of an international union of vampire hunters.
If watching Day Shift turns out to be even half as much fun as it looks like making it has been, we're in for a good time when this one reaches the Netflix streaming service.
